Rich Attonito

Waterfront Director

2017 starts my 64th summer at CAMP!!  I have literally been in camping from the time I was 4 years old as a camper, until now.  When I was 17 years old, I started working at Pierce Camp Birchmont (where I went as a camper) starting in the kitchen as a Shift Leader, General Counselor, Athletic Specialist, Assistant Group Leader, and three summers as a Division Head. I spent the next 25 years as Athletic Director and several years as also Program Director. I have been here at Meadowbrook since 1999.  My first role was as the Ropes Director and after that first year, I’ve since been Camp’s Waterfront Director.  As you can see Camping has been my life’s love.

I retired from Mendham HS in 2011 after 43 years of teaching and coaching.  I have continued to coach Football and Golf since retiring.  I have been honored by the Mendham community by being elected to the Mendies Hall of Fame for the 1975 State Championship in football and in December 2015 was inducted into the Mendham HS Hall of Fame.  In November of 2016 I was inducted to the Roselle Park Hall of Fame for our 1969 undefeated State Championship.  I am also a member of the New Jersey Wrestling Officials for nearly 50 years, and a winner of the Richard Mershack Award for outstanding contribution to Wrestling.  I have also been a volunteer for 40 years with the Madison Fire Department, spending the last 8 years as Battalion Chief.

To me, Camp is a wonderful life experience. You have a chance to meet and make new friends, learn new and exciting activities in a warm, safe, caring environment. In my 17 years at MCDC I have seen great advances in the development of all aspects of camp life.  The facility has been updated from top to bottom. The installation of new bathrooms, a new fieldhouse, new tents, newly renovated athletic fields, upgraded athletic equipment and newly planted trees throughout camp.

The best part of camp is the warm, caring, loving professionals that oversee the daily adventure of the campers & staff.  I look forward to continuing my role at Meadowbrook as we continue our devotion to the personal development and happiness of our members of our Camp family.

I live in Landing with my lovely wife Loretta.  We are blessed with six children (3 each) also rounding out the family is eight grandchildren - 6 Girls, 2 Boys and 2 dogs.

I have been at Meadowbrook since 2009!  Naturally, my favorite Camp activity is boating.  My favorite non-Camp activities are skiing and hiking, all depending on the season. I also like scrapbooking and working on my model train set.

Dana Pierro

Assistant Pool Director

I’ve been a Pool Director at MCDC since 2014 and I have 2 boys named Aiden & Owen.  Of course, my favorite camp activity is swimming!  My favorite non-camp activity is painting and a close 2nd would be camping with my family.  I am also a sports fan, and my favorite teams are: football: Jets (Giants at a close 2nd) & hockey would be the NJ Devils!

Assistant Waterfront Director

I have 3 children all of whom were campers at Meadowbrook from 2006 to present… Austen 18, Maddy 16 and Brennen 13 who is entering his 11th year at Meadowbrook as a Supers Camper.  I have over 35 year of pool experience that includes, lifeguarding, teaching lessons, high school coaching, managing pools, lifeguard training, swim lesson program development, and pool director. I will be completing my 28th year as a teacher of mathematics where I spend my time with 6th graders 10 months out of the year.  Camp provides me the opportunity to step outside into Mother Nature’s classroom and teach swimming that is a vital life skill.  The progression of watching the youngest camper just 3 years old transition into confident swimmers over the years is the heart of the swim lesson program at Meadowbrook.

Swim

About Our Swim Program
A strong swim program is a hallmark of the Meadowbrook program. We recognize that Day Camp is the place where children have the opportunity to learn and practice this critical life skill. Meadowbrook’s outstanding Swim Instruction program is based on the Red Cross Swim Program. Each Camper swims at least twice each day. For Campers up through 6th grade, the first swim is instructional and the second is a free swim. Additionally, all Pre-K and Kindergarten Campers get an additional swim lesson one afternoon per week. Instructional Swim levels are based on skill proficiency only, while Free Swim levels are based more on stamina and swimming efficacy.

Before moving any Camper to a higher level in either Swim Instruction or Free Swim, we must be confident in the Camper’s ability to swim safely in the new swim area. Camper safety is always our primary concern. Please note that earning a new colored band does not move a Camper up to a new Red Cross Skill Level in their Swim Instruction period as they will continue to be evaluated on the specific Red Cross Swim Lesson criteria followed by our Swim Instructors. Our three adult Waterfront Directors have nearly thirty (30) certified Red Cross lifeguards ensure safety and effective progress with swim skills. Swim instructors also send home individualized progress reports throughout the summer

Swim Instruction

Our Swim Instruction Program is based on the Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program. To maximize learning, we have modified the Red Cross Program to provide 2-3 “sub-levels” at each Red Cross level. On the first day of Camp, all new Campers will be evaluated to determine their Red Cross Skill Level for Swim Instruction purposes. Returning Campers will begin Swim Instruction at the level where they ended the previous summer. Swim Instructors will send home a Swim Report several times during the summer indicating the child’s swim progress in our Swim Instruction program.

General Swim

All Campers will receive a colored wristband indicating their Free Swim level. These bands are worn each day during their group’s Free Swim period and clearly indicate to our Lifeguards and Campers where each Camper can safely swim based on their current swimming ability. Initial Swim Bands are based on current Red Cross Levels. Red Band Level 1 and Level 2 (shallow water) Green Band Level 3 (middle section) Blue Band Level 4 thru Level 6 (deep water)
